Horns
Network rules and procedures are essential to providing a safe network for all users. Our network rules and procedures are risk-based and prescribe multi-layered safety controls, including the use of horns by trains and track machines in the following situations:
- As necessary for safety
- As an audible warning, including if there are people or animals on or near the track
- As an acknowledgement of handsignals or detonators
- Before level crossings
- Before tunnel entrances and exits (unless instructed otherwise by signs) and
- Before shunting, crossing or passing movements on adjacent track.
Horns are also tested in stabling yards and maintenance centres as part of the train preparations carried out by our drivers and guards.
We recognise that horn noise can be a source of community concern and recently completed a dedicated program which covered:
Review of horn use
We reviewed horn use and horn testing on our network and compared it with current national and international practice.
Report for the environmental regulator
We have submitted the outcomes of our review to the Office of Environment and Heritage to enable appropriate management by the environmental regulator.
