Heritage and conservation register

Ourimbah StationMany of the state's heritage items are owned or managed by NSW Government agencies. Under Section 170 of the NSW Heritage Act 1977, all state government agencies must keep and administer a database of heritage assets called a Section 170 Heritage and Conservation Register.

The Section 170 Register is an important resource to be used for making decisions about maintaining, conserving and making changes to heritage assets. For each item listed on RailCorp's S170 Register, you can find a description of what is included within the listing, information about its history, photographs, and a 'statement of heritage significance' which explains what the key heritage values of an item are.

How to use the register

The register is divided into two sections. Each section contains listed items in alphabetical order.

  • Section 1 contains places listed on RailCorp's S170 Register.
Most items are listed as part of a station 'precinct' or 'group' of related items, rather than individual listings for each asset. Therefore it's important to check any listings within a suburb for an item you are investigating.
  • Section 2 contains moveable heritage items on RailCorp's S170 Register.

If you press ctrl and click on the 'Item name' you can access the full details for each item as contained on the NSW Heritage Branch, Office of Environment and Heritage website.

To check if an item is listed on another heritage register, such as the NSW State Heritage Register or a Local Council LEP Heritage Schedule you can search for other listings at the NSW Heritage Branch, Office of Environment and Heritage website.

Make sure if an item is also included on another heritage register that this listing is checked as well, as some important details may be different between listings.

Please also check to ensure you are always referring to the latest version of the register.

Heritage Asset Management Strategy

Throughout 2010-11 RailCorp developed a Heritage Asset Management Strategy (HAMS) that outlines a five year strategy for RailCorp’s diverse and extensive heritage portfolio. The Strategy was produced with input from RailCorp’s Asset Operations Group, Property Division, Engineering & Projects and Office of Rail Heritage.

The Strategy outlines how RailCorp will:

  • continue to manage its heritage assets according to the principles outlined in the NSW Heritage Council State Agency Heritage Guide in a manner that retains heritage significance and ensures positive conservation outcomes
  • continue programs to further improve existing heritage management across the organisation
  • achieve an integrated and sustainable heritage asset management approach that is consistent with RailCorp’s overall asset management and service delivery as outlined in the RailCorp Corporate Plan and Total Asset Management Plan.

As outlined in the Strategy, 2010-11 (year one) has a focus on aligning RailCorp’s updated S170 Heritage and Conservation Register with existing RailCorp procedures and systems. Positive achievements have also been made towards improved heritage management in the areas of asset maintenance, management of surplus assets, skills sharing, funding assistance, development of heritage management tools, records and archives.
