Aim of the program

The aim of our Future Operational Leaders Program is to create individual training and development that allows our recent graduates to experience all aspects of operations, providing them with the technical and management capabilities to ensure that the current and future business needs of RailCorp are met. Future Operational Leaders are given the opportunity to develop through:

  • having a customised career development plan for the entire duration of the program
  • being given exposure to a number of business areas to increase knowledge
  • skills and expertise and to gain a holistic understanding of RailCorp
  • the provision of on-the-job training and coaching and
  • mentoring by experienced managers and colleagues.

What we are looking for in a Future Operational Leader?

We are looking for recent graduates who want to develop a career in a rail environment and:

  • are able to lead and drive change
  • take an innovative approach to problem solving
  • enjoy working in a team and dealing with people
  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • are committed to producing timely and quality work and
  • have an aptitude for learning and a drive to succeed.

How the program works

The Future Operational Leaders Program aims to develop a group of recent graduates who will be capable of managing in a Train Operations function within three to five years of completing the program.

The objectives of the Future Operational Leaders program are to enable the graduate to:

  • make operational decisions to enable the delivery of safe, clean and reliable passenger services that are efficient, sustainable and to the satisfaction of our customers
  • communicate with and influence stakeholders within and external to RailCorp to ensure that appropriate customer service levels are maintained
  • provide sound analysis of system operations to support improvements to service delivery and
  • contribute to the strategic and operational planning for service delivery.

It is a three year rotational program consisting of a series of rotations across a number of business areas in RailCorp with a specific focus in the Operations Division within the Service Delivery Group.

Future Operational Leaders in the operations areas are employed under a temporary three-year contract at a starting salary of $50,226 per annum (inclusive of industry allowance), plus superannuation and leave loading will be paid to the successful applicant.

During the program Future Operational Leaders will utilise their analytical and business writing skills in contributing to:

  • lead and drive change
  • delivering critical safety initiatives
  • driving business improvement initiatives and
  • improving rail passenger services to the community.

Future Operational Leaders will also gain experience in change management, project management, leadership, communication and management skills.

What do I need to be eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply you must have a minimum of one year supervisory work experience in a part time or full time capacity.

Ideally your degree will be in transport logistics or operations management, however, other business related degrees, including post-graduate are also welcome.

Applicants must also satisfy the following criteria at a minimum:

  • graduates with overseas qualifications need to demonstrate that their degree has been recognised officially by an Australian university and validated to Australian standards
  • all applicants must be eligible to work in Australia and
  • satisfy the selection criteria as stated on the position description which you can download here.
