Information & Communications Technology (ICT) Graduate Program

An overview of the ICT Group

The RailCorp Information & Communications Technology Group (ICT Group) was formally established on 1 July 2005 to provide services, infrastructure and systems to RailCorp’s business groups.

This has been directed by the ICT Strategic Plan, a five year blueprint covering all aspects of ICT’s responsibilities. Substantive progress has been made during the first two years of implementation. Focus for the remaining three years of the Plan involves building and intensifying the business-ICT partnership, continuing to strengthen ICT methods and processes, and ongoing migration to an enterprise approach for the provision of computing services.

Graduates will have the opportunity to rotate across any of the five ICT functional areas within ICT to gain a variety of skills and knowledge to assist them in choosing their ICT career path. The functional areas are:

Strategy & Architecture
Responsible for ICT’s strategies, policies and standards, Enterprise wide architecture and roadmaps, and Information security and management.

Project Management
Project support and reporting, business relationship management, project management and application development methodologies and vendor relationship management.

Enterprise Resource Planning Delivery
Supporting major upgrades, maintenance and enhancement of RailCorp’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

Portfolio Delivery
Support, maintenance and enhancement applications through the key portfolio areas of Integration, Asset Management, Corporate Systems, Service Delivery, and Passenger Information Systems.

Operations Delivery
Managing the outsourcing contract for the provision of Service Desk, Desktop Support, Data Centre and Server Management support together with operation of the RailCorp Test and Release Centre.

Examples of our current projects

Enterprise Content Management (ECM)
Involves the implementation of an ECM system to capture, classify, store, publish and archive RailCorp’s vast information assets. Through the integration of discrete information stores, the ECM will provide a single view of all operational data. ECM in RailCorp covers email, Internet / Intranet / Extranet, collaboration, workflow, resources and document management.

An ambitious program is now underway to implement the platform and undertake initiatives to redevelop RailCorp’s Intranet, Internet and plan room functions. These will be followed by projects to transform RailCorp’s document and records management functions.

Business Intelligence (BI)
RailCorp has embarked on an enterprise-wide BI initiative to address the need to provide a reliable environment that delivers corporate information, analytics and reporting in a consistent and effective manner.

To deliver major BI benefits to the organisation, RailCorp has embarked on initiatives beyond reporting to include information analysis. This has been enabled through a wide range of technology capabilities available in BI today, including online-analytics, dashboards, scorecards, predictive modelling and data mining.

Passenger Information Systems
A major upgrade to RailCorp’s passenger information systems including the upgrade of its Line Controller Information software, replacement of passenger information screens on platforms and concourses with new Liquid Crystal Displays, and an upgrade to the Variable Messaging Screens.

ICT's passenger information team is also undertaking an upgrade to RailCorp’s network of CCTV cameras and customer Helps Points.

Train Communication Systems
New systems to enable precise location of trains on our network, as well as new technologies to capture and exchange information on our trains with shore-based application systems.
