Fitter
As a RailCorp apprentice you are trained in the maintenance of train pneumatic braking systems, pneumatic doors, direct and hydraulic drive systems and diesel engines for suburban, intercity and heritage train fleets.
Apprentices are trained to operate lathes, milling machines, drills, grinders, oxy-acetylene cutting equipment and electric welders as well as general hand and power tools and general fitting.
Your experience will also include work with private companies carrying out fitting and machining to gain industry qualifications.
Qualifications and licensing
On the completion of your apprenticeship you will achieve:
- Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical Trade
- Training provided to support an electrical license application
Schedule of training
Four-year apprenticeship including on and off-the-job phases:
- Year 1 Two days per week at TAFE and three days on-the-job training
- Year 2 One day TAFE and four days on the job training
- Years 3 and 4 On-the-job under the supervision of a tradesperson
