Electrical apprenticeshipsRailCorp offers electrical apprenticeships across three areas of specialisation: signals, substation distribution and rolling stock.

As well as gaining comprehensive training and experience in the rail industry, you are given experience externally with private contractors and are given the necessary training to gain an electrician’s licence.

Signal electrician

As a signal electrician you will work on the installation and maintenance of electrical and mechanical signalling, point machines, colour light signals, power supplies, track circuits, control systems and multicore cabling systems.

On the completion of your apprenticeship you will achieve a Certificate IV in Rail Signalling.

Substation distribution electrician

As a substation distribution electrician you will help power our rail network. You will work on the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in high voltage rail substations including rectifiers, transformers, and high and low voltage switchgears. It also involves the installation and maintenance of general lighting and power services together with various types of electrical appliances.

On the completion of your apprenticeship you will achieve a Certificate IV in ESI - Substation.

Rolling stock electrician

The installation and maintenance of high and low voltage electrical equipment for RailCorp’s train fleet is your job as a rolling stock electrician. This includes train operating computer systems, train radios, electric motors, lighting and power circuits, generators, relays, circuit breakers, transformers and associated equipment. It also involves the installation and maintenance of low voltage lighting and power services at our maintenance depots and offices.

On the completion of your apprenticeship you will achieve a Certificate III in Electrotechnology - Systems Electrican.

Qualifications and licensing

  • Training provided to support an electrical licence application

Schedule of training

Four-year apprenticeship including on and off-the-job phases:

  • Year 1, 2 and 3 One days per week at TAFE and four days on-the-job training
  • Years 3 On-the-job under the supervision of a tradesperson
