Cable jointer
Cable jointers work in a branch of the electrical trades with direct non-rail equivalents in domestic, commercial and industrial work. As an apprentice cable jointer you will be involved in making and repairing joints in insulated power supply and control cables installed in underground pipes, trenches, and overhead supply systems.
As a specialised cable jointer you will work all over the rail network. The work is physically demanding and rewarding, primarily outdoors and will involve safe working at heights at various times of the day and night, seven days per week.
At a qualified level you will be responsible for installation and maintenance of underground and overhead electrical cable supplies, substation builds and the installation of major pieces of equipment and infrastructure.
Qualifications and licensing
- Certificate III in Electricity Supply Industry (Cable Jointing)
Schedule of training
Four-year apprenticeship including on and off-the-job phases:
- Years 1 and 2 One day per week at TAFE and four days on-the-job training
- Years 3 and 4 On-the-job under the supervision of a tradesperson.
Rail-specific training is provided by qualified tradespeople at various locations throughout the length of the apprenticeship.
