Apprenticeships

RailCorp is a secure and rewarding organisation that offers unrivalled opportunities for apprentices to gain life long skills and drive fulfilling careers.

RailCorp provide exciting opportunities for apprentices, with careers across a wide range of areas – for electricians to telecommunications experts to mechanics. While apprentices get paid to learn, they gain valuable experience that allows them to grow and develop, whether they are just out of school or planning a career change.

Each year RailCorp offers around 80 apprenticeships to applicants who have a genuine interest in the rail industry.

RailCorp is an equal opportunity employer. Women and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.

Building our future

RailCorp delivers around one million passenger trips each weekday to and from more than 370 stations. Every day, CityRail operates a fleet of more than 1,500 carriages over 2,100 kilometres of track controlled by more than 2,500 signals. An operation such as this requires skilled tradespeople, both for maintenance and to help build the railways to keep pace with future growth.

Apprentices Telysha and Nabil with CEO Rob MasonThe Sydney Morning Herald featured RailCorp’s Apprentices in their Apprenticeship and Traineeship Feature in July 2009. See below for a sample of what the apprentices, as well as our CEO, Rob Mason has to say about the apprenticeship program.

Nabil was rewarded for his combined work and study efforts, winning an Apprentice of the Year award in 2008, which was presented by the Minister for Transport and RailCorp's CEO.  "I have a better job and more responsibility, and now when I’m at a party and people ask me what I do, I don’t say, 'I'm a labourer', I say 'I'm a traction linesman'."

Telysha didn’t pick what might be considered by some as a traditional career path, but she’s certainly glad she chose to pursue an apprenticeship with RailCorp. "It was a new opportunity to better myself. I wanted to work in a large organisation that was well recognised not only locally, but all over the state. Picking RailCorp was easy".

"We need apprentices because we need people to help us build the railway of the future", says Rob Mason, CEO of RailCorp.
